The Lord demands accurate scales and balances;
he sets the standard for fairness.

Who sets the standard for fairness in your company?

Food for Thought

I cook a lot these days. I’ve learned the value of knowing the difference between teaspoons versus tablespoons, liquid measure versus dry measure, and whatever you do, even if your wife tells you to do it, don’t add five chicken bouillon cubes to a pot of chicken and rice! In other words, I’m learning the importance of measure. God knows how to measure—it was his invention. He expects us to learn how to measure and to do it fairly. In our business dealings he expects us to be honest—a day’s work for a day’s pay; accurate scales and true product weights in the marketplace; and a sharing of crops or profit between owner and laborer.

Another important measure in the eyes of God is love. In fact, Jesus tells us that love pretty much constitutes everything that God has to tell us. He instructs us, in the first and foremost command, to “love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.” In other words, to love God without measure. The second command is to “love your neighbor as yourself.” In other words, your love for those around you should at least measure up to what you would do or how you would care for yourself.

So, how’s your love for God and others measuring up these days?

Next Steps

If your love for God and others has grown a little cold, it’s time to visit the love doctor, the apostle John. Read the gospel of John and John’s letters this week. Practice what you read. In no time, your love meter will begin to register what it should. I guarantee it.
